Supporting children and whānau across Wānaka and the Upper Clutha
At Aspiring Occupational Therapy, we understand that starting therapy can bring a mix of curiosity, hope, and questions. We’re here to make the process clear and supportive every step of the way. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions families ask about occupational therapy, what to expect from sessions, and how we can work together to help your child thrive.
what is occupational therapy (Ot)?
Occupational Therapy helps children build the skills they need for everyday life — from playing and learning, to managing emotions and building independence. At Aspiring OT, we use movement, play, and sensory-based approaches to help children feel calm, confident, and capable in their world.
who can benefit from occupational therapy?
We support children who may experience challenges with:
Sensory processing (seeking or avoiding movement, touch, sound, etc.)
Emotional regulation and attention (including ADHD, Autism, anxiety, or “big feelings”)
Gross and fine motor skills (balance, coordination, handwriting, self-care)
Primitive reflex integration and postural control
Body awareness, confidence, and self-regulation
If you’re not sure whether OT is the right fit, we offer a free discovery call to chat about your child’s needs.
what happens in a therapy session?
Sessions are playful, movement-based, and tailored to your child. Therapy might include obstacle courses, games, movement and sensory activities, and strategies for emotional regulation (like Zones of Regulation).
Our aim is to create sessions that feel fun, safe, and empowering — never clinical or stressful.
where do sessions take place?
We provide sessions at home, in school, or in the community around the Wānaka and Upper Clutha region. This helps your child learn and generalise skills in familiar environments.
how long are sessions?
Sessions are usually 30-45 minutes, depending on your child’s energy, focus, and needs.
how do i get started?
You can reach out through our contact form or email us directly. We’ll begin with an initial consultation to discuss your goals, assess your child’s needs, and create an individualised therapy plan.
do i need a referral?
No referral is needed — families can contact us directly.
However, we also work with teachers, GPs, and early intervention teams to ensure your child receives consistent support.
what should my child wear?
Comfortable, move-friendly clothing is best! Sessions may include jumping, crawling, climbing, or messy sensory play — so clothes that allow movement (and can get a bit mucky) are ideal.
How can I support my child between sessions?
We’ll give you simple home-based activities and strategies to support progress between sessions. These are designed to fit easily into daily routines — like playtime, bedtime, or school transitions — to help your child build regulation and confidence at home.
what ages do you work with?
We primarily work with children aged 2–12 years, supporting early development, emotional regulation, and school-based skills, Although we have also worked with older children and adults.
Are there funding options available?
Yes! Many families in the Upper Clutha region access support through the Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust (UCCMT). This trust helps local whānau cover costs for medical and therapy services for children, including occupational therapy.
We can guide you through the application process and provide the documentation needed to apply, making it easier for your child to access the support they need.
what makes aspiring ot different?
Our approach blends play, connection, and evidence-based practice.
We believe that children learn best when they feel safe and understood — and we focus on helping them build both skill and confidence.
Every session is personalised, engaging, and grounded in the belief that all children can thrive with the right support.
